In a major step toward revitalizing transatlantic ties, Ghana and Jamaica have officially reconvened their Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) for the first time in nearly twenty years.
The third session of the PJCC, held in Accra on May 26, 2026, was co-chaired by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith. The high-level ministerial meeting followed a preparatory session by senior officials the previous day.
Renewing Historic Ties and Private Sector Growth
Opening the session, Minister Ablakwa framed the meeting as a renewal of historic, Pan-African bonds and shared ancestry. He emphasized that the PJCC offers a practical roadmap to turn these cultural ties into concrete economic benefits across several key sectors, including trade, agriculture, defense, tourism, and education.
Ablakwa stressed the importance of fostering private sector partnerships and creating jobs and skills training for the youth. He also expressed appreciation for Jamaica's support of UN Resolution A/RES/80/250 and reiterated Ghana's dedication to healthcare collaboration, cultural diplomacy, and diaspora engagement.
Reciprocal Support and Future Trade Missions
Senator Johnson Smith echoed these sentiments, noting that the meeting marked a renewed determination to advance bilateral relations, which officially began in 1958 but date back much further culturally. She extended Jamaica's gratitude to Ghana for its assistance in reconstruction efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa.
Looking ahead, Johnson Smith confirmed Jamaica's commitment to deepening cooperation in education, healthcare, defense, and air services. As immediate tokens of this partnership, she announced that Jamaica will offer scholarships to Ghanaian athletes and coaches, and will soon dispatch a trade delegation to Ghana to boost private sector ties. She also thanked Ghana for its upcoming deployment of medical professionals to support the Jamaican healthcare system.

The ministerial session concluded with the signing of five pivotal bilateral documents aimed at institutionalizing the renewed partnership:

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU): Defense cooperation between both nations.
