Ghanaian Social Media Figure Abu Trica Re-Arrested Following Court Ruling

Frederick Kumi (Abu Trica)

Legal proceedings involving Frederick Kumi, the high-profile social media personality known as Abu Trica, took a sharp turn on Monday as he was re-arrested immediately following a High Court decision regarding his extradition case.

The development unfolded after the High Court dismissed Kumi’s application for a writ of certiorari, which sought to challenge previous proceedings at the Gbese District Court.

Kumi is currently at the center of a major legal battle involving romance fraud allegations originating in the United States. U.S. authorities have formally requested his extradition to face charges abroad.

  • Initial Charges: Kumi and two others were originally facing extradition proceedings at the District Court level.
  • The State’s Withdrawal: Prosecutors eventually dropped charges against the two co-accused.
  • The "Conspiracy" Defense: Kumi’s legal team argued that because the primary charge was conspiracy, the case against their client could not legally stand once his alleged accomplices were cleared.
  • The Discharge: The District Court agreed, discharging all three individuals.

Despite being discharged, Kumi’s lawyers pursued a High Court application to quash specific elements of the District Court’s record. However, the Attorney-General’s office argued that the application was moot—essentially a dead issue—because the prosecution had already been discontinued.

Defense counsel Oliver Barker-Vormawor countered that the legal "discharge" had not translated to physical freedom, noting that his client remained in custody despite the court’s order.

In response, Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai informed the court that if Kumi remained detained solely on the discontinued charges, immediate steps would be taken to rectify the situation.

The High Court ultimately struck out the application, ruling that since Kumi had already been discharged by the lower court, there was no longer a live controversy to adjudicate.

The relief was short-lived, however, as law enforcement officials moved to re-arrest Kumi shortly after the hearing concluded. He remains a key figure in the ongoing extradition request by the U.S. government
