Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is reportedly expected to return to Ghana by the end of this week to answer to a series of high-level legal challenges. Sources close to the government indicate that he will face charges ranging from corruption to causing financial loss to the state, alongside undisclosed counts currently being prepared by the Office of the Attorney General.

Speaking on JoyNews Newsfile, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, revealed that a quiet but extensive investigation into Ofori-Atta’s financial activities has been underway for some time. Dr. Ayine confirmed that the Ghanaian government is collaborating with American authorities and foreign investigators to track the former minister’s offshore transactions.

"We are tracking all offshore dealings," Dr. Ayine stated, noting that while domestic and international investigations are ongoing, they have already reached a significant stage.

The Attorney General also clarified the circumstances surrounding Ofori-Atta’s recent detention in the United States. Contrary to rumors of a simple visa overstay, Dr. Ayine disclosed that the U.S. State Department revoked Ofori-Atta’s visa as far back as July 2025.

Key details of his US legal status include:

Initial Deadline: He was ordered to depart the US by November 29, 2025.

Apprehension: Following his failure to leave, he was taken into custody in Virginia on January 6, 2026.

Court Date: He is scheduled to appear before an immigration judge on January 20, 2026.

Dr. Ayine outlined a potentially lengthy legal battle ahead. If Ofori-Atta chooses not to "self-deport," he could move through various levels of the U.S. judicial system—from district courts to the Supreme Court—to contest his removal or extradition.

Despite the looming legal battle, the Attorney General confirmed he has been in contact with Ofori-Atta’s U.S.-based legal team. He has reportedly offered assurances that the former minister will receive fair treatment under Ghanaian law upon his return.
